Adaptive and Inclusive Music Education for Special Learners
Led by retired Special School District special education and music teacher Paula Berner and music educator Jessica Ingraham, this workshop is designed for elementary/general music teachers. Together we’ll answer the question, “How do we help special learners find success in the music classroom?” Participants will come away with a deeper understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) as we look at understanding the diagnosis and the student. We’ll discuss IEP’s, review some best practices for managing difficult behaviors in the music room, and explore the differences between adaptations and modifications and how we can best use them in our lesson planning and instruction to help all students find success.
